What will happen if you are convicted of a crime?

We recently discussed how sentencing factors must be considered when you are planning your defense. These factors have a big impact on what you are going to face if you are convicted of the charges placed against you. We know that you might not want to think about that possibility, but there aren't any guarantees when you are facing a criminal charge.

Let's talk about what might happen if you are convicted and sentenced to serve time in jail or prison. The first thing that you need to think about is your job. Unless you have a very understanding boss, the likelihood is that you have lost your job. You won't have any income while you are in prison so you will have to rely on family members or friends to get the things you need.

That brings up another aspect of going to prison or jail -- you have to leave your family behind. Your children won't have you around, which can lead to problems for your child. Your spouse will have to learn how to live without you right there. This can add a lot of stress to your relationship that you can't do much about when you are locked up.

Another thing that you have to think about is having to pay fines. This can mean that you have to cut back on other things in your life to give money to the court system. This can also make your family suffer.

We know that none of this is easy to think about, but you have to think about these points. This might help you to stay on top of your defense so that you might have a shot at minimizing the impacts of the criminal charges.
