Ohio Man Charged in Kentucky Murders

A 47-year-old man from Logan, Ohio, was arrested recently after authorities alleged he killed two members of his family who lived in Blaine, Kentucky.

The day prior to his arrest on charges of possession of a gun by a felon and auto theft, law enforcement answered a call where a 52-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman were discovered shot to death inside their home. According to media reports, the deceased woman was the stepmother of the slain man.

Allegedly, the Logan man murdered the two and then stole a vehicle owned by one victim. The day after his arrest, he was also charged with double counts of murder. He awaits extradition to Kentucky from the Columbus, Ohio, jail.

It is unknown whether the man has retained outside counsel or whether he will be represented by the public defender’s office.

Anyone facing multiple charges of murder needs to begin working on his or her defense from the moment of the arrest. This includes exercising the right to remain silent and insisting on the presence of a criminal defense attorney whenever being questioned by police. Giving up one’s right to remain silent will certainly come back to bite the defendant later on at the trial.

A defense attorney can sometimes turn the tide of a case in the client’s favor by introducing the possibility of doubt in the minds of one or more jurors, but the attorney can only do so much. It is up to the defendant to hold up his or her end of the bargain and adhere to the legal advice provided by their counsel of record.
