Don’t let a DWI derail your life

Getting arrested for drunk driving can have far-reaching consequences into all areas of your life.

For some, a conviction for driving while intoxicated is enough to cause them to be terminated from their employment, or have the door to certain career opportunities permanently closed to them. This can be true of those who work, or planned to work, in the fields of transportation, nursing, law or teaching. Additionally, some elected officials might have to resign their positions upon being convicted of DUI.

Some convictions can cause drivers to be forced to spend hundreds of their hard-earned dollars on the installation and monthly maintenance of expensive ignition interlock devices that won’t allow the car to start without giving an initial breath sample that is free of alcohol.

Some states, like our neighbor to the north, Ohio, can require that drivers install special “whiskey plates” after a DWI conviction. These specially designed plates shame not just the one convicted of DWI but any friend or family member who also drives or rides in the vehicle that is now a moving target for law enforcement.

While no one is going to argue that allowing impaired drivers to get behind the wheel is a good idea, there are definitely circumstances where law enforcement officers and prosecutors are too aggressive in their pursuit of arrests and convictions.

It is just those type of circumstances that can allow an otherwise responsible driver to get caught up in a DWI dragnet that can ruin careers and dampen relationships that were formerly convivial.
