Penalties for Felony Convictions Are Serious

In our previous post, we discussed how the classification of a crime has an impact on the possible sentences and other repercussions that you might face. As felonies are the most serious classification of charges, if you are facing a felony charge, you will need to determine how you are going to fight those charges.

Felony charges in Kentucky carry penalties of incarceration for one year up to life in prison. Felonies are divided into different classes differentiated by letters. Class A felonies are the most serious, and Class D felonies are the least. The class of the felony you are facing is determined by the charge, so determining the class will let you know what you are facing.

Class D felonies carry penalties of one to five years in prison, while Class A felonies carry penalties of either 20 to 50 years or life in prison. Those are some serious sentences that you face if you are convicted of a felony. On top of the incarceration periods, it is also likely that you will have to spend time on post-incarceration supervision.

We understand that all of this is a lot to think about when you are facing felony charges. We can help you learn what statutes apply to your case and how you might be able to launch a successful defense to the charges. The defense strategy that you use has to be tailored to fit the circumstances of your case, which requires scrutinizing the prosecution’s evidence against you so that we can determine how best to move forward.
